Ntozake’s Lady in Yellow is an homage to the Black feminist American playwright-poet Ntozake Shange, whose name in Zulu means “she who comes with her own things” and “who walks like a lion.” Shange’s work has heavily influenced my ideas of emotional labor and reflects my own desire to embrace feeling intensely human and resistant to feeling alienated by the racial and sexist sentiments that remain pervasive.
